Growing up in southwest Louisiana offered a multitude of musical influences. "You heard mostly Pop or Country music over the airwaves in my home town." However, Lake Charles, Louisiana was, and still is, an area where Zydeco music is king. In spite of this, Kenny became a student of contemporary music. Lets put my childhood environment in perspective; this was the Deep South in the early seventies. I was the part of the first group of minority kids to integrate my high school." He remembered becoming interested in the guitar as a small child by listening to gospel groups that featured the guitar as the only backing instrument. "My first gig as a guitarist was in a gospel group. I soon learned to love Jazz, R & B, Blues and Rock , which I also heard over the radio at certain times and certain days. As a pre-teen, it was not unusual to find me in my room jamming with recordings of Wes Montgomery, or the Isley Brothers, or Steppenwolf. I also enjoyed; and still do, listening to the instrumentals from that period. In those days, popular radio would broadcast releases from bands like the Meters, Booker T & the MGs and others right along with Hendricks and the Beatles. In todays' segmented market, you hear instumental music almost exclusively on "Smooth Jazz" radio. I am not complaining, however, but genre labeling for marketing purposes always seem to limit an artist and the exposure that they receive. I was probably influenced by just about any music I found innovative or interesting. I would call what I do as Guitar Instrumentals. Thourgh there may be many musical style elements at play in my compositions, my aim is simply to create an enjoyable experience for the listener."
